MEACO: Uveitis in the Middle East

Uveitis can be caused by numerous infectious and noninfectious immunologic disorders. It can also be associated with a variety of systemic diseases. In addition to involvement of the uveal tract, adjacent ocular structures such as retina, optic nerve, and vitreous may be affected. The distribution of the types, clinical associations, and causes of uveitis in a given population is strongly influenced by various genetic, geographic, and environmental factors. It is important to have sufficient knowledge of the common varieties of uveitis within a community in order to facilitate rational investigation and management. The pattern of the causes and systemic disease associations of uveitis in the Middle East are different from that of other geographic regions. The aim of this session is to provide a comprehensive review of the available data on the pattern of the causes and common systemic disease associations of uveitis in the Middle East.
