Top Message from the President, Leopold Schmetterer
Recently the EVER Board has, in a secret vote, taken the decision to move the EVER conference 2012 to Nice, France. This decision was taken after a long discussion taking into account all aspects of this complex problem. Indeed EVER has come into the most difficult situation since its foundation after the last EVER conference. Whereas the EVER conference 2011 was scientifically a success, many of us were faced with travel delays due to the strikes in Greece. After the congress we had feedback from EVER Members and potential Sponsors suggesting that there might be a very significant drop in participants for EVER 2012 in Crete. This would put the very financial stability of EVER at risk and hence threaten our own survival as a pan-European organization. As such we deemed it necessary to move to Nice and stay at this venue for 4 years instead of the originally scheduled 3 years. This is also in accordance with the aims of our Strategic Plan to move EVER to larger European Cities that can be reached easily. The EVER board will try its best to organize a smooth and successful EVER meeting 2012 in Nice. We ask our members to support this aim by advertising the 2012 meeting in their proximity and convince colleagues to join us. Looking forward to meet you 2012 in Nice Top Message from the Secretary General, Bahram Bodaghi
The year 2011 is another major step in the life of our young Association, EVER. On behalf of the board, I would like to thank you for your active contribution to our second meeting organized in October in the beautiful island of Crete. We apologize for any inconvenience due to the unexpected social movement, which alters your travel plans on arrival and/or departure. Despite these incidents, the attendance was almost stable compared to 2010 and the scientific level of the congress was outstanding. The friendly but also constructive atmosphere of discussions emphasized the importance of EVER for the future of European research in Visual Sciences. We would like to express our gratitude to the local organizing committee and especially to Professor Ioannis Pallikaris for their assistance and major contribution. We are also grateful to all those, members or non-members, who answered to the 2010 online survey. Based on 346 votes, the results of this poll helped us better understand your expectations and consequently improve our scientific program, while respecting the original spirit of our Association. EVER will stay in Mediterranean venues and we will do our best to find easily reachable destinations. You have also expressed the importance of changing the venue regularly. Most of you have approved the current organization of the program and the balance between special interest symposia, courses and free paper sessions. Education is another major aims of EVER. We are glad to announce that the 2014 Course of the European Community University Professors of Ophthalmology (EUPO) will be held during the EVER meeting in the French city of Nice. We hope that both organizations will continue their close collaboration in the future and find more answers to the expectations of young scientists and clinicians. I hope to see you next year for another successful EVER meeting. Top Message from the Treasurer, Jean-Jacques Gicquel
