Top EVER @ ARVO Highlights by Jost JONAS
This year's ARVO meeting had many highlights which were impossible to catch by a single attendee. One of the most important topics was ocular angiogenesis including its pathogenesis and treatment. There may be accumulating evidence that besides VEGF, other molecules may take part in the process of ocular neovascularization, and with that mind, one may aim to develop specific blockers of these additional substances involved in the neovascularization process. Needless to say that due to the vast number of patients who could benefit of such new treatment strategies, the pharmaceutical industry also showed intense interest in such developments.
Ocular imaging, particularly the modern developments of optical coherence tomography was another main theme of ARVO 2007 highlightening the new possibilities to biomicroscopically see histological details in a spatial resolution unachievable so far. It also opens the possibility for functional imaging of the retina.
The collaboration between ARVO and EVER has further been intensified.
The EVER - ARVO symposium Pearls of Research in Europe with Profs. José Cunha-Vaz, John Forrester, José Sahel and Eberhard Zrenner as speakers was very well attended and showed up research possibilities in Europe including funding and high-level scientific results.

There will be further collaborative EVER-ARVO symposia at this year's EVER, at the next Asia-ARVO
in Hyderabad / India 2009, and the next ARVO in Ft. Lauderdale in 2008.
